New Energy Department Investment in HVACR Projects

Few things are quite as important as energy efficiency these days. It’s a concern that seems to pop up at almost every turn, and not only are individual companies focused on it to help reduce their own carbon footprints and save some cash in the process, but the United States government, as well as governments around the world, have placed a renewed focus on energy efficiency as well. That’s more evident than ever thanks to the U.S. Department of Energy’s new $19 million investment in a number of different HVACR projects designed specifically to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

The projects funded by this investment are quite varied. New sensors and energy modeling tools are being developed to employ smart technology in buildings, as well as reduce problematic refrigerant leaks. Other projects include work on low-impact, gas-powered heat pumps designed specifically for colder climates. Energy storage is also a key part of this funding.

Why the renewed focus? In the United States, buildings are the biggest consumers of energy. Statistics suggest nearly 40% of the energy used happens in commercial buildings, and that means if the projects pan out, reduced energy use in the US would occur on a far greater scale than it might if another type of structure, like US homes, became the focus of this funding.
